Carbon Offset

The Problem

Private jets produce hundreds of billions of pounds of CO2 annually.

It’s shocking, but true. A typical large private jet produces about 15,000 pounds of CO2 in the first 60 minutes after takeoff. That’s equivalent to the amount of CO2 produced by an average SUV in a year.  While some newer jets are more efficient, and biofuel availability should help reduce emissions, the new super-midsize jets produce an astounding 50,000 pounds of CO2 during a round-trip flight between New York and Los Angeles. In fact, a typical jet flying only 500 hours per year produces two to five million pounds of CO2 annually.

Like any business issue, these staggering figures need to be addressed. By joining forces, the operators of private jets and the clients who fly on them can combine resources to create meaningful change.

The Solution

We plant more than one million trees each year to clean the air.

To offset the emissions from our aviation operations and operate as a carbon neutral entity, Earth Air pledges to plant or preserve more than one million trees in remote, protected forests each year. Over time, these initiatives will keep pace with our business efforts to ensure that we remain carbon neutral.

Why are we planting trees rather than just buying less expensive carbon credits? Today’s carbon-trading markets represent billions of dollars in commerce annually, but they have evolved to primarily focus on profits, rather than sustainability. In order to tangibly offset our emissions, Earth Air chose to improve the earth’s natural air filtering system by reestablishing lost forests and preventing the loss of existing forests. These endeavors will define Earth Air’s quantifiable and verifiable future carbon offset activities.

“Private jets produce hundreds of billions of pounds of CO2 annually and I, for one, can’t ignore the billion pound elephant in the room.”
